A Member-Led Coalition
The Sundarban Coalition brings together community-based organisations, local NGOs and other civil society actors working with climate- and disaster-affected communities in coastal Bangladesh.
Coalition members contribute local knowledge, organisational experience and strong community relationships. Their participation helps ensure that the Coalition’s plans and actions are informed by local priorities and led by organisations rooted in the communities they serve.
Our Geographic Presence
Coalition members work across coastal districts in southwestern Bangladesh, including:
- Satkhira
- Khulna
- Patuakhali
- Barguna
These areas face recurring cyclones, flooding, salinity intrusion, waterlogging, livelihood disruption and other climate-related risks. Through local presence and community relationships, member organisations can identify emerging needs and support timely, locally appropriate action.
The Role of Our Members
Member organisations play a central role in the governance, planning and implementation of the Coalition’s work. Their responsibilities include:
- Participating in Coalition governance and collective decision-making
- Consulting communities to identify risks, needs and priorities
- Developing and implementing Joint Action Plans
- Coordinating with local government and other stakeholders
- Supporting disaster preparedness and climate resilience initiatives
- Promoting the participation of women, youth, persons with disabilities and marginalised communities
- Monitoring activities and maintaining accountability to communities
- Sharing knowledge, experience and learning across the Coalition
- Contributing to advocacy, communication and resource mobilisation
- Following relevant safeguarding, financial and organisational standards
Local Knowledge, Collective Action
Coalition members live and work close to the communities they support. This local presence enables them to understand changing risks, identify vulnerable groups and develop responses that reflect community priorities.
By working collectively, members can share experience, coordinate their interventions, reduce duplication and strengthen engagement with government, civil society, development partners and donors.
Strengthening Member Capacity
The Coalition supports the organisational development of its members so they can manage programmes and resources with increasing independence and accountability.
Capacity-strengthening areas include:
- Governance and organisational management
- Financial management and compliance
- Programme planning and implementation
- Monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning
- Safeguarding and complaint management
- Procurement and asset management
- Reporting and documentation
- Advocacy and communication
- Emergency preparedness and response
- Resource mobilisation and partnership development
Support is based on identified organisational needs and may include assessment, mentoring, technical assistance, training and regular follow-up.
Commitment to Inclusion and Accountability
Coalition members are expected to promote inclusive participation, equitable partnership, transparency, safeguarding and accountability throughout their work.
Members support the meaningful participation of communities, including women and girls, persons with disabilities, Indigenous communities, young people and other groups facing social, economic or climate-related vulnerability.
